What is the School Health Portal?

The School Health Portal supports schools in their efforts to create a health-promoting environment. We offer access to simple and practical tools and evidence-based materials that schools can use to develop and strengthen their health promotion activities.
Together for health

Why the need for a School Health Portal?

The school environment is important for student health and a prerequisite for successful learning. It should therefore be health-promoting and support the students' attainment of the educational goals.

According to the new guidance document directed at the school health team service from the National Board of Health and Welfare, the activities of the school health services should be mainly focused on health promotion, rather than the treatment of illness. The document also states that the activities should be evidence-based and include interventions at individual, group and organisational level. This requires that the school management, the school health team and the teachers work together, and should have sufficient access to information about effective methods. The School Health portal was developed to provide support and inspiration to facilitate this work.

In this portal, we have gathered current and relevant research on health-promoting interventions on different health topics, suited to the school environment. The materials and tools provided should enable the school to easily plan, implement and evaluate interventions, as part of its strategic health promotion work.

The materials and tools help schools to:

  • map out needs with assessment questionnaires
  • identify and choose an appropriate evidence-based intervention(s)
  • implement these interventions
  • follow up their health promotion efforts

Why focus on the school environment?

Interventions aimed at promoting the physical and mental health of the individual child should be combined with interventions in the school environment to achieve lasting and measurable effects. Also, a health-promoting school environment will benefit all students equally regardless of background.

Factors in the school environment, often called structural factors, include factors related to the school's physical and social environment and to health-related policies and procedures. In other words, the School Health Portal helps the school´s management to review and improve their physical environment and routines in a systematic way. This approach is aimed at the entire school, which can complement the important work that the student health service is already doing.

Knowledge about effective interventions and methods is often inadequate, partly because efforts are rarely properly evaluated or not evaluated at all. The School Health Portal is based on systematic literature reviews of effective strategies within a number of health areas. The material is compiled by experts and researchers within the field of health promotion for children and young people at the Stockholm County Council.
